Celebrating the nurses we count on for safe surgery – Perioperative Nurses’ Week 2021

Perioperative Nurses’ Week, 3 October to 9 October, is an opportunity to celebrate the unique profession of perioperative nurses and the daily contribution they make to ensuring safe surgery practices for our patients.

Hosted by the Victorian Perioperative Nurses Group, this year’s theme ‘Count on me for safe surgery’, focuses on the importance of surgical count in the perioperative setting. This means ensuring all items used during surgery and procedures are removed from the patient unless they are intentionally retained.

Perioperative nurses operate with the highest standard of management and accountability during surgery and procedures. This year, the Casey Perioperative Team played an important role in the review of the Surgical Count Policy at Monash Health.

Perioperative Nurses’ Week is also an opportunity to raise awareness across the health sector and the need for systematic monitoring of the practices, systems, and processes in place to reduce potential risks, hazards and preventable harm to our patients.

To all Monash Health perioperative nurses, we would like to say thank you for your ongoing hard work and commitment to ensuring the safety of our patients during surgery and procedures.
