This week is National Diabetes Week and the theme is ‘Heads Up on Diabetes’, with a focus on the impact of diabetes on mental health.
According to Diabetes Australia, people with diabetes make 180 extra decisions a day, with more than a third of people saying they feel burned out by managing diabetes. This week, Diabetes Australia aims to promote more conversations about the impact diabetes can have on a person’s mental and emotional wellbeing.
At Monash Health, we offer a wide range of services to patients with Diabetes. Our dedicated Diabetes Education team comprises a committed team of educators that are devoted to supporting people with diabetes across all Monash Health sites. Our team works closely with our endocrinologists, dietitians and podiatrists, and has embraced technological advances in the management of diabetes.
Elizabeth Hutton, Credentialed Diabetes Nurse Educator in the Diabetes Unit, spoke to the hesitation patients may feel in seeking medical treatment at this time:
“Many people are reluctant to attend their medical appointments and have been grateful for telehealth and Webex sessions for education and support. It’s important for them to stay connected with their diabetes teams and support networks such as family and friends. We encourage them to stay active, eat healthily, and stay connected, to maintain their mental and physical health.
“During COVID-19 our practices have had to change dramatically in the delivery of support and education of our patient cohort. This has included Webex sessions, telehealth, and one-on-one education sessions. These changes have highlighted the flexibility, commitment and enthusiasm of our Diabetes Educators to continue supporting people with diabetes during this challenging time,” Elizabeth said.
