Professor Derek Chew has been appointed as Service Director at Monash Heart, a role that will see him shaping cardiology at the Victorian Heart Hospital.

Professor Chew is a clinical and interventional cardiologist and a cardiovascular health systems researcher. He will also be the inaugural Director of Health Informatics Research at the Victorian Heart Institute, located within the Victorian Heart Hospital.

He has previously held appointments as Professor of Cardiology at Flinders University, Network Director of Cardiology for the Southern Adelaide Health Local Heath Network, and most recently had served as the Commissioner on Excellence and Innovation in Health, South Australia.

He has completed a Master of Public Health at the Harvard School of Public Health, with training in epidemiology, trial design, biostatistics, clinical trials, and cost-effectiveness analysis. His PhD thesis explored the factors for improving heart attack care in Australia.  Prof Chew has a particular interest in the system factors that drive evidence translation in cardiovascular care.
