“It was 8 May 1978,” says Christine, confidently recalling the date she started at Dandenong Hospital.
“Those were the days you could walk in off the street and ask for an interview…but I’ve seen lots of change.”
Christine Flewin is one of over 1,400 employees we will be celebrating at this year’s Length of Service Awards.
Starting her career as a ward nurse, Christine trained at Prince Henry’s before moving to Dandenong Hospital.
After 23 years on the wards, Christine moved to the holding bay in theatre where she checks patients in before surgery and has been there ever since. What has kept Christine with her team for so long is the supportive environment.
“The department is marvellous,” she says.
“My father passed away recently, and many of my colleagues attended the funeral. I feel very well supported.”
Christine also attributes her cohesive working environment to being amenable with her colleagues.
“I’m pretty easy to get along with – I use my manners! And there are wonderful people who work for Monash Health, and the patients are great.”
Outside of work, Christine enjoys going out for meals, meeting family and friends for coffee, going shopping and seeing movies. Easy viewing and family-friendly movies are her preferred choice.
There hasn’t been as much time for shopping lately. Recently, Christine has spent much of her time caring for her mum, particularly since her father passed away.
Christine says her role at Monash Health has given her a great deal of pride and satisfaction.
“I’m contributing to the local community, meeting people, and contributing to the workforce.”
