Nurses and doctors from far and wide were welcomed to Monash Children’s Hospital this week for our sixth ever Paediatric BASIC course.
The first to run since COVID-19, the two-day interactive course on 5 and 6 December taught a group of 24 participants the fundamentals of paediatric intensive care and provided a great opportunity to share different experiences, practises, and ideas.
As well as experienced consultants in Paediatrics, Paediatric Emergency Medicine, Anaesthesia and Surgery, advanced ICU and Paediatric trainees plus PICU nurse consultants at Monash Health, we welcomed health professionals across Greater Melbourne and interstate – with one participant coming from as far as remote Western Australia.
Run by our PICU team and instructors from Monash Children’s Hospital, The Royal Children’s Hospital and The Northern Hospital, the course consisted of lectures, workshops, and skill stations to assist participants to gain fundamental knowledge required for initial pre-transport stabilisation, advanced resuscitation, and intensive care management of critically ill and injured children.
The course participants were very impressed by the quality of teaching provided by Monash Children’s Hospital and were excited to take new knowledge and skills back to their own workplaces.
“I just loved it! The lecturers were amazing, giving us clear take-home messages and being so engaging,” one participant said.
“The scenarios were great – especially with ventilator troubleshooting. It was great to learn about real situations and scenarios where each of the problems can arise,” another participant said.
While a third participant said: “I was grateful for the enthusiasm of the whole faculty and their passion for their craft was obvious to me.”
