Practicing empathy – Digital Wellbeing Series

Available for all our employees, the Digital Wellbeing Series by the Resilience Project includes ten three-minute videos covering topics such as gratitude, emotional literacy, sleep and exercise.

Each month we will put the spotlight on a different topic and share new strategies you can slowly introduce into your daily routine to help prioritise your health and mental wellbeing.

This month the focus is: Empathy

To practice empathy is to feel what someone else feels and to put yourself in their shoes.

Research shows the more empathetic you are, the more likely you are to act in a kind way. Performing kind behaviours prompts your brain to release hormones that lead to emotions like joy and happiness.

To become a more empathetic person, consider increasing your daily acts of kindness towards others. This does not require grand gestures, but small everyday kind behaviours that may include:

  • Holding the door open for a family member, friend, colleague or stranger
  • Shouting a friend or a colleague a coffee at lunch
  • Letting a stranger into traffic on your drive home
  • Calling or texting a friend to remind them that you care about them

When you perform kind behaviours for someone else, not only does it have a positive impact on them, but it also has a lasting positive impact on you and your emotional wellbeing.

You can practice empathy every day, by looking for opportunities to be there for your colleagues, family, friends and strangers. To help you stay accountable, consider setting yourself a goal to achieve three small acts of kindness every day.

You can access all 10 topics of the Digital Wellbeing Series. However, the monthly spotlights aim to help you focus on one topic at a time. To make new lasting habits, it is important to start small, add in one change at a time and to remain consistent. If you feel more comfortable, you can complete all modules in your own time.
