Dr Dee Nandurkar and Dr Doug Anderson – both Directors of Training in Radiology – are the STAR Award winners for Excellence in Research, Teaching and Innovation for Q1, 2022.
This award recognises an individual, group or team who develops innovative ways to improve the quality of healthcare and service delivery.
Dr Caitlin Farmer, who nominated the pair, has said that it was hard to choose which STAR Award category to nominate Doug and Dee for, because they exemplify each category so well.
“Doug and Dee are a unique and incredible team who exemplify Monash Health’s values,” says Caitlin.
Dee’s seemingly endless energy in her role as Director of Training is matched only by her commitment to caring and advocating for trainees. Upon cancellation of Specialty examinations, Dee was not only a kind and thoughtful voice of support for those affected, but also immediately increased her teaching commitments to provide all trainees with extra learning opportunities.
“It’s a nice feeling knowing we have helped so many very clever people achieve their goal of speciality training,” says Dee. “I’m sure it’s a feeling known to and enjoyed by the many other educators at Monash Health.”
During the pandemic, Doug ensured Radiology trainees continued to receive high level training by taking on extra teaching sessions. Doug has continuously worked to improve conditions not only for trainees but for the department, health service and community as a whole – one example being his willingness to support after-hours advancement of patient care by essentially being on-call most weekends.
“It takes a village to make a radiologist!” says Doug. “Thanks go to the trainees themselves who have worked long and hard hours serving the needs of the patients of Monash Health while finding the time to complete the academic requirements and very difficult exams required to transition to consultant life. We would like to also thank all the other staff in the department who have contributed to teaching and mentoring the trainees during their journey including the clerical staff, nurses, radiographers, sonographers and our consultant colleagues.”
Doug and Dee’s colleagues would like to say thank you for their tireless dedication, and their commitment to providing above-and-beyond training and support. Thank you, Doug and Dee.
