At our recent Employee Wellbeing Forum, we discussed men’s mental health for Men’s Health Week (13-19 June). We were fortunate to be joined by James Sclater, the National Learning Solutions Manager and consultant from Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provider, Converge International, who talked about men’s mental health and our EAP.
James referred to the definition of mental health used by the World Health Organisation and explained that, like our physical health, mental health is a continuum from healthy to ill.
“For most of us, we spend most of our time in the healthy and reacting stage.”
“When we move into the injured and ill stage, that’s where we really should be seeking the help of professionals.”
James tested us with a quiz that helped us reflect on some of the issues men face regarding mental health.
Tying in with the “Healthy Habits” theme for Men’s Health Week in Australia, James also shared some common self-care strategies for men, how to support men’s mental health and how to seek help.
